Reuters informs us that Nokia made some changes to its leadership structure and phone business, following the announcement of its first quarterly loss in many years. Thus, the company will split its phone business into three sections: Mobile Phones (cheaper models), Smartphones (handsets running Symbian) and Mobile Computers (high end devices running Linux software).
Nokia also brought a manager on board, a former member of rival Apple, just one day after announcing its quarterly loss. The Finns have had their market share decrease, because of the success of Apple and RIM products and the decreasing sales of smartphones during economic depression. It’s the Smartphones segment that needs the most help from Nokia, specially since competition is tight, with the likes of Apple, RIM and HTC also part of it.
John Martin, from Apple will be the head of the Mobile Computers business since November, but Mobile Phones will certainly remain the cash cow of the Finnish company, being lead by Rick Simonson, Nokia CFO since 2004. Timo Ihamuotila is the new CFO of the handset maker.
