Multitouch is so last year, it seems, specially now that we can see a new input method in action in the video below. This is a vision-based interface we’re talking about, meant for mobile devices and based on tracking the 3D motion of a human fingertip by using a camera.

Developed by Professor Masatoshi Ishikawa and Dr. Takashi Komuro of the Tokyo University, this technology is called the “vision-based input interface”. All five fingers can be recognized and used for typing on a virtual keyboard, click, browsing photos, zoom and even draw images.

The demo you can see in the video above includes a forward facing camera, a high speed unit (154 frame per second sensor on board). We have a long way to go till we reach the Minority Report user interfaces, but we’re on the right track.
