Samsung has just announced two new CMOS image sensors for smartphones: the S5K4E2 and S5K5CA, both HD-capable and packing neat imaging features. Samsung S5K4E2 is a 5 megapixel chip that comes with noise removal technology and supports barcode and business card scanning.
This sensor is also able to record clear video images at full resolution (up to 15 fps) and uses the SEES (Samsung Enhanced Energy Steering) pixel technology. This chip fits into a 6.5mm x 6.5mm module, with a 4.5mm height, making it ideal for ultra-slim phones.
As far as the Samsung S5K5CA sensor is concerned, this is a 3 megapixel system-on-chip (SoC) solution, combining a CMOS image sensor and an image signal processor. This solution is probably the first 3MP chip that supports HD video recording. This unit is already being mass produced, while the S5K4E2 will enter this phase before the end of Q1 2010.
