We’ve recently seen a shot of a leaked clamshell BlackBerry unit, running BB OS 6.0 and while the device was pretty ugly, the platform is interesting. What you can see below are screenshots of the new OS, available on the web courtesy of some AT&T sources.
RIM’s new browser now comes with tab switching, a different skin, new favorites and multitouch support. The media player was also redone and it looks quite neat, we have to say, with the navigation being done using the finger, in order to browse the album artwork. The BlackBerry maker has also implemented system-wide kinetic scrolling, for a more fluid experience, specially when browsing lists, web pages and emails.
Multitouch is also available all across the system, web browser and photo app included, plus pinch to zoom is also here. The message inbox was also improved, so it now looks cleaner and more modern, but it hasn’t evolved that much. RSS feeds are also built in, while the main improvement of BB OS 6.0 can be considered its homescreen.
Widgets don’t seem to be supported, but at least the homescreen is customizable with pages. You’ll slide left and right to reach the next page of apps, but you can also slide up and down. “Modal popups with gestures” is another achievement of the new OS, so if you tap and hold on a touchscreen handset, you’ll get a 9 icon group, that’s a context menu.
The photo app looks like the one on the iPhone, while composing an email is done easily and straight forward. As far as the release date is concerned, you’ll get BlackBerry OS 6.0 in June/July, 100%.
