We’ve heard about the Bluetooth SIG organization or the WiFi Alliance, but the WiGig Alliance must be new, since they don’t sound familiar. However, they promise a new wireless standard that offers data transfer rates of up to 7 Gbps, while using 60 GHz bands.
This standard supports backward compatibility with the existing 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands used by WiFi 802.11 devices. The new standard would bring higher speeds than current WiFi 802.11n, useful for high definition media freaks who transfer huge amounts of data. Backward compatibility means that older non-WiGig supporting devices will still support the new networks
Cisco is also working on this initiative and they seem pretty excited with the opportunity. 10 times faster than 802.11n is certainly something appealing…
