Oppenheimer’s Yair Reiner has made an expert guess on how many iPhone 4 units Apple sold over the first day of the product’s launch in shops, reaching the amount of 1.5 million. This is one and a half the number of iPhones sold in 3 days in 2009 and 2008.

Reiner’s calculations include the 600,000 units pre-ordered in the US, plus 100,000 non-reserved units moved at the Apple stores. Also, he takes into account the 50,000 units sold into Best Buy and multiplies the total by two for international sales.

Also helping these estimations, there’s a survey available, courtesy of the same expert. He surveyed hundred of buyers on Thursday, getting the following results: 76% of customers went with upgrades, on average after 14.7 months, while 14% intend to buy an iPad in the next 3 months and 21% were new AT&T customers and 41% of those came from T-Mobile, while 28% came from Verizon.
