You want to know the reason why your battery never lasts enough to keep you satisfied, even if we’re talking about mobile phones, digital cameras and notebooks? It’s the small capacity of the graphite anode to absorb Lithium Ions, in these batteries. As a solution to this issue a Korean team of researchers has developed a new material for anodes.
The new battery would use porous silicon structures, whose only defect is that they are perishable and need to be changed frequently. However, the scientists managed to use an argon atmosphere to create carbon-coated silicon crystals in a highly porous structure.
These resulting materials have a high charge capacity for Lithium ions and will be able to store more energy, making batteries last longer, without the extra silicon mass laying around.
