Samsung has just confirmed that it will start mass producing flexible AMOLED panels for smartphones in Q2 2012. Also, they’re saying that we’ll see handsets with such screens on the market next year. There will be a 5.5Gen plant opening in Q2 to face the demand for the new technology.
The same WVGA resolution 4.5 panel that was shown on prototypes last year will be kept, but Samsung wants to also manufacture smaller units. They mentioned watches for example, but also larger displays for tablets and MIDs. Home applications and lighting can also be involved in the project. If you’re wondering about specifics, know that the new screens use a polymide plastic substrate instead of the standard glass substrate.
This allows the screen layer to be furled around a cylinder that’s 2cm in diameter. Due to the AMOLED tech, the power usage will we low and backlight won’t be a problem. Samsung is so confident, that they describe the new screens as unbreakable. I guess that we’ll have to wait and see…
