There are many ways to hack and customize a mobile phone, but it’s very rare that we get to see a “medical hack” like this one. Now, you can turn your handset into a blood testing lab, as did UCLA researcher Aydogan Ozcan. He turned a cellphone into a device that tests blood for HIV, malaria and whatnot.

The handset only needs a blood sample placed on the camera sensor and it uses a filtered light source to do the tests. That light source exposes unique cell qualities and through those, the medical software on the device analyses data and discovers various illnesses.

Let’s hope this technology reaches consumer level and doesn’t stay in the lab.
