Although T-Mobile wanted to release a system software update till January 15th, an insider claims that it’ll reach the G1 units at the end of the month. Known as RC31 and codenamed “cupcake”, the update will bring an on-screen keyboard to the T-Mobile G1, in order to complement the physical one.

The hardware keyboard works only in landscape mode, when the screen slides upwards, uncovering the QWERTY keypad. Thanks to the virtual keyboard, you’ll now be able to enter text while using the phone in portrait mode.

We’re wondering what else is there to find in this update, maybe a couple of bug fixes?
