After September’s IFA 2012 and Nokia World 2012, now in October we have the CEATEC event, that included a showcasing from Sharp. The Japanese display maker showcased some new screen panels, with 1080p resolutions and 5 inch diagonals. These displays offer an incredibly good pixel density of 443 ppi and they’re only prototypes for now.
The mass production will start later this month and Sharp uses the thinnest GS Silicon technology in this case, reducing the layers between the LCD display and the user’s eyes. Viewing angles are quoted as impressive. It appears that the new screens use TFTs produced with continuous grain silicon instead of the famous IGZO transistor technology. If 442 ppi doesn’t impress you, you should know that the iPhone’s Retina Display only offers 326 ppi. Sharp has previously reached 498 ppi on a 6.1 inch IGZO prototype display in the past, but that’s not for commercial release
The CG silicon technology offers faster response times and higher resolutions. I expect the new 5 inch displays to make it to future smartphones and phablets, maybe the 2012 year end quad core Snadpragon S4 handsets with Android Key Lime Pie…
