Japanese operator NTT DoCoMo just unveiled yet another model from its winter lineup, a phone called Sharp Aquos Phone Zeta SH-02E. This device is the first production handset with an IGZO display. I’m talking about the indium gallium zinc oxide technology, that promises higher translucency compared to the standard LCDs.
This reduces the demand for backlightning and means that there’s less battery drain. Aside from its brand new 4.9 inch 1280 x 720 pixel display, the SH-02E has a pretty nice specs sheet, that includes a 16 megapixel camera, a 1.5 GHz quad core Snapdragon S4 processor and Adreno 320 graphics, as well as NFC and NTT DoCoMo LTE compatibility. The only downside here is that the handset comes with Android 4.0 ICS, instead of Jelly Bean, but I supposed it will get JB fast.
The indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) is a semiconducting material, that can be used as a channel for a transparent thin film transistor. LCD screens used amorphous silicon, that has been replaced by IGZO, due to the advantage of its higher electron mobility and smaller pixels, plus higher reaction speed for the screen.
