Sony’s Xperia P continues the tradition of handsets with modest specs that are covered in precious metal. The Xperia P just got a luxury version covered in 24 carat gold, available in only 15 units. We’re still dealing with a dual core 1 GHz handset, but more of an experiment this time.

The Xperia T got the James Bond treatment, so such experiments happen quite often these days. Sony also has a nifty promo regarding this new product, offering a golden Xperia P to its followers on Facebook. Not sure what the criteria for getting one is, but I’m sure you won’t get it out of the house too much, since it basically asks random people on the street to mug you.

The Xperia P fits in the lineup of new Sony phones with a transparent area at the bottom. This phone was announced in February, released in May and it measures 10.5 mm in thickness and weighs 120 grams, although it may weigh more now, with an extra coating of gold. It has a 4 inch 540 x 960 pixel display, 16 GB of storage, no microSD card slot, HSDPA 14.4 Mbps connectivity, an 8 megapixel camera and originally came with Gingerbread if you can believe it…
