Sony Mobile Communications is preparing even more waterproof phones, or so say the sources close to the matter, as we’re getting closer and closer to IFA 2014. Waterproof cases may become a standard for the company’s midrange models in 2015.

Sony Mobile’s recently launched Xperia M2 Aqua comes with a qHD IPS display with a 4.8 inch diagonal, so it’s certainly a modestly specced device. It also has an 8 megapixel shooter, a quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 CPU, an 8 megapixel camera and IP68 waterproof and dust resistant abilities. The Xperia M2 Aqua can be immersed in 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes and it also supports technology, while its price is pretty affordable at below 250 euros.

The Japanese company already has solid partners in Tawian, like FIH Mobile, Compal and Arima Communications, all of them ODMs for the firm’s waterproof models. Other handset vendors looking at waterproofing as the next big thing are Samsung, HTC, Lenovo and even smaller player Coolpad. The ratio of waterproof models to total smartphone shipments will increase by 20 to 30% over the next two years, according to sources.
