Digitimes Research has some interesting details about Qualcomm’s future plans, that seem to be involving inexpensive mobile devices, with Allwinner and Microsoft solutions on board. Qualcomm isn’t having a great year in the higher end segment, so it may focus on other areas.
However, MediaTek and Spreadtrum offer very solid options in the midrange and entry level segments and Qualcomm’s shipments in China have been dropping a lot. Qualcomm has decided to work closely with Microsoft on the Windows 10 for Mobile platform and on cheaper smartphones priced at around $80. The same chip maker has partnered with Allwinner Technology to release solutions for slates with phone functionality.
The products are targeting Europe, the US and emerging markets, with mass production slated to begin in the third quarter. The Chinese 4G LTE market has been growing for the past year and Qualcomm’s solutions had strong demand in China. In the meantime MediaTek and Spreadtrum started offering more competitive 4G solutions and got the bulk of the midrange and even high end product lines.
Qualcomm is becoming aggressive, as they try to get China back, while in the high end area, their comeback may just be the S820.
