It’s finally time for the Apple Watch to get an expert opinion from us, here at GSMDome.com, but before that it’s time for an unboxing. The device is being tested in the Sport 42 mm aluminum version and it came inside a long and tall box as shown below.
The Apple Watch debuted in April this year and it’s available in 3 major versions: Sport, Watch and Edition, each of them with 2 big variations: 38 mm and 42 mm. The cheapest one you can get is the Sport 38 mm, priced at $349, while the 42 mm Sport is priced at $499. The Edition is made of 18 karat gold and starts at $10.000. Inside the box of the smartwatch we found the watch, a watch band, the manual, a magnetic charger with a 2 meter long cable and the USB power adapter.
By the way, the 42 mm Apple Watch has a diagonal size of 1.54 inches and uses an AMOLED panel with a 312 x 390 pixel resolution. Inside we find 512 MB of RAM, 8 GB of storage, plus a battery with ca capacity of 205 mAh, as far as I’ve hear. There’s NFC, Bluetooth and WiFi on the connectivity side and the watch also offers a speaker and a mic.
Apple promises 18 hours of functioning time here and their product brings an accelerometer, gyroscope and heart rate sensor too. The device works with devices from iPhone 5 upwards, but we relied on an iPhone 6 Plus in our test. The setup was quite fast and involved scanning the screen of the watch while displaying a special animation. Then with a few taps the installation process started and in about a minute and a half we were done.
Then we had to adjust to the crown button, that can be rotated to scroll lists and zoom into the cloud of apps that constitutes the app list. There’s also a physical button with On/Off functionality among others. Apple Watch is splash resistant within IPX7 standards and it’s very easy to place on the wrist and wear, although the strap may be prone to sweating.
We’ll be back soon with a full review!
