Chinese handset maker Vivo and holder of a few mini records related to smartphones has decided to open a smartphone plant in Noida, a region in India. This move is not surprising, considering Foxconn also did something similar recently.
Noida is short for the New Okhla Industrial Development Authority and it’s an urban area that’s part of the Capital Region of India. It was ranked best city in housing in all of India in the Best City Awards of 2015. Vivo will have an operational plant in the region in 3 to 4 months and they’re looking at hiring 2000 people. The factory will be able to manufacture one million handsets by the end of 2016.
Jerome Chen, deputy general manager at Vivo India claims that the company is going to invest $25 million by the end of year in this country. India is experiencing a smartphone boom, but its taxes on import remain high, that’s why device makers prefer to manufacture products locally. Vivo wants to sell two million smartphones in India this year and 6 million handsets by the end of next year.
