You can tell you’re doing something right when other companies are trolling you. That’s what Xiaomi went through recently, when patent troll Blue Spike LLC from USA accused then of patent breach.

The company filed a breach claim with the Federal Court of Texas, claiming that Xiaomi had used an intellectual property on data protection and security features. The documents mention quite a few Xiaomi models, going from the Mi 4 to the Mi 4c and Mi 4i and the Mi Note Plus. There’s even the yet unlaunched Xiaomi Mi 5 and Mi 5 Plus listed in the claim.

US Patent 8.930.719 is covered here, having to do with “a method or device used for data protection”. Blue Spike has been keeping busy, with 45 demands in 15 days and they’ve probably accused other firms as well. It would be interesting to see if there’s any big company behind this small player. Hugo Barra from Xiaomi is a former Google employee so he’s well versed in how to deal with these problems.

We’ll see how this plays out.
