After more than half a year of cooperation in the field of optics and inclusion of Leica tech on Huawei devices, the two companies announced this week the opening of an R&D center. It’s called Max Berek Innovation Lab and it’s headquartered in Germany.
Huawei and Leica Camera AG thus expand their cooperation, that will have the Mate 9 as a fruit of their work, with dual 20 MP cameras. The center was inaugurated in Wetzlar, Germany, close to the global Leica HQ and it’ll help with the development of optical systems and technologies, plus software related to AR and VR. Huawei and Leica are also going to cooperate with German universities and international ones, as well as research institutes.
The center was founded under the guidance of Ren Zhengfei, Huawei founder and Dr. Andreas Kaufmann, president of Leica Camera AG board. Ren Zhengfei believes that the future of data traffic is 90% videos and images, so optics on mobile devices will be key. The name of Max Berek was used here, because he’s the German pioneer of microscopy and the creator of the first Leica modules, as well 20 other such units for the 35 mm camera invented by Oskar Barnack.
