After a loooong period of leaks, renders and hands on photos appearing online, the Xiaomi Mi 5S is finally official and it’s available in two versions: the Mi 5S and Mi 5S Plus. The devices are high specced, particularly the bigger Mi 5S Plus, that even comes with dual cameras on board.
The basic model, the Mi 5S opts for an unibody aluminum design, with brushed metal finish and curved edges. There’s a 12 megapixel back camera with F/2.0 aperture an PDAF, plus a 4 MP front shooter for selfies, with 2 micron pixel size. Also upfront there’s a 5.15 inch Full HD screen with an IPS LCD panel, 1500:1 contrast ratio and support for pressure sensitivity.
Then there’s the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner, courtesy of Qualcomm, the Snapdragon Sense ID. Inside we find a Snapdragon 821 CPU, 3 or 4 GB of RAM and 64 or 128 GB of storage. There’s a 3200 mAh battery inside and connectivity checks out via 3XCA network support. The product goes for $299 for the 3 GB RAM/ 64 GB storage model and $344 for the 4 GB RAM/ 128 GB model.
The Xiaomi Mi 5S Plus brings up the game, with a 5.7 inch 2.5D curved screen, a Snapdragon 821 CPU and a dual 13 MP camera setup. There’s also a dual tone LED flash, PDAF, 4K video and the same front camera as the Mi 5S. We’ve got an USB Type C port here, a 3800 mAh battery and Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0, as well as a full metal unibody design.
This model runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow with MIUI 8 on top and lets you choose between a version with 4 GB or 6 GB of RAM. 4G LTE is here as well, plus that fingerprint scanner. This model is priced starting at $344 for the 4 GB RAM model and $389 for the 6 GB RAM one. Availability happens from September 29th.
Mi 5S is available in gray, silver, gold and rose gold and the same colors are available for the larger model. It’s interesting to notice that the dual camera setup works like the one on the Huawei P9, as one camera captures color images and the other only black and white pics. There’s no Bayer filter here, though and no Leica tech.
