This week was all about the IFA 2017 show in Berlin, where Huawei was also present, bringing its latest CPU, the Kirin 970. The chipset is AI capable and comes with a brand new NPU (neural processing unit), courtesy of a very potent GPU. During that event Huawei confirmed it was going to debut the “Mate 10 Series” on October 16th in Munchen.
Turns out that there’s more than the Huawei Mate 10 coming, as there’s also a Huawei Mate 10 Pro. Both will sport the Kirin 970 10 nm processor and the brand new edge to edge display that Huawei has been teasing. Of course dual camera is still in the mix, with Leica optics. With all the hints about machine learning and AI, it’s very likely that Huawei will surprise us with a virtual assistant come October.
Kirin 970 is an octa core chipset, with 4 Cortex A73 cores and 4 Cortex A53 ones. The GPU is an ARM Mali G72 MP12 and we get support for dual cameras, including a monochrome one, plus LPDDR4X memory. LTE Category 18 is also supported, with theoretical speeds of up to 1.2 Gbps. This new chipset should be able to fight the Snapdragon 835 on equal terms and maybe even the Apple A11 once it’s out.
Huawei Mate 10 is expected to debut with a 6 inch Quad HD edge to edge screen, 6 or 8 GB of RAM and up to 256 GB of storage. I’m guessing that the highest end features will be reserved to the Pro model. We expect a 4000 mAh battery and a 20 MP + 12 MP dual back camera.
