After being unveiled at CES 2018, the Sony Xperia XA2 has started selling this month and we have it here for testing purposes. We’ve unboxed it below, for you all to watch. This is a midrange phone, that focuses on a higher end camera and Sony even tries out a new design. Priced at around $349, the device gets unboxed below.
First thing I noticed is that this handset is beefier than the predecessor, thicker and heavier for sure. There’s a 5.2 inch screen upfront and we see that the display panel has curved sides, the aluminum frame is also slightly curved and the back is gently curved too. Available in silver, black and pink, the phone comes with a pretty spartan box, with a charger (5V, 1.5A), USB Type-C cable and manual.
There’s no pair of headphones, at least in the version we played with. Available with Android Oreo on board this machine measures 9.7 mm in thickness and weighs 171 grams. It features a 23 megapixel main camera with 4K video capture and hybrid autofocus, plus a LED flash. There’s also 120 FPS slow motion capture. For selfies we have an 8 megapixel camera with a 120 degree wide angle lens, like we saw on the Xperia XZ1 Compact.
Specs include a 5.2 inch Full HD screen, while inside we find a Snapdragon 630 CPU, 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage. There’s a microSD card slot in the mix too and a 3300 mAh battery, which sounds generous for this diagonal size. The fingerprint scanner has been placed at the back and other features include Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, USB Type-C, 4G LTE and WiFi a/b/g/n/ac. I should also mention we are playing with the dual SIM version of the phone here.
There’s Clear Audio+, a smart amplifier and Clear Bass, plus surround sound. It all sounds like a solid multimedia phone, maybe a bit too curvy for my tastes, but we’ll see how it behaves over the next days. You can find it here.
