Back at MWC 2018, Nokia unveiled the Nokia 6 (2018), together with 4 other phones, spanning all types of segments, from flagship to fashion phone, feature phone and even an Android Go model. The Nokia 6 (2018) ended up rebranded to Nokia 6.1 in some markets and we have that exact model here for testing. We’ve unboxed it below and it’s priced at $299.

This is an Android One phone, that follows in the footsteps of the Nokia 6 best seller, which had excellent sales in China and India. The device is made from a single block of aluminum and borrows the cool metallic accents from the Nokia 7 Plus. Inside the box we find the headphones, USB Type-C cable, manual and SIM key. The handset has bold color accents, like copper for the black version, iron for the white one and gold for the blue one.

The phone measures 8.15 mm in thickness, going up to 8.6 mm with the camera bump. It weighs 170 grams and packs a 5.5 inch display with Full HD resolution. No 18:9 here, just 16:9, like the predecessor. Also unchanged is the 3000 mAh battery or the 3 or 4 GB of RAM. There’s also 32 GB or 64 GB of storage and microSD. The CPU has been bumped up to the excellent Snapdragon 630 and we also have two microphones with OZO tech in the mix.

Strangely, while Nokia 6 had two speakers, this one has a singular one, with a Smart Amp included. We also have an USB Type-C port, audio jack, LTE Category 4 and Bluetooth 5.0. On the camera front we find a 16 megapixel back shooter with PDAF and dual tone flash, as well as 4K video capture. Selfies are taken with an 8 MP camera with 84 degree lens.

By the way, the main camera got Zeiss optics this time and hopefully it’s better than the Nokia 6 one, which often times felt inferior to the Nokia 5 one. A fingerprint scanner has been placed at the back for good measure. I have a good feeling about this phone, even in spite of it being so wide and not easy to wield with a single hand. We’ll be back with a full review and you can get it here.
