In spite of the fact Huawei was trying to really make it big with the Ascend series, by including its own CPU on board of those smartphones and all that, it seems that their efforts are about to get canned. Huawei intends to give up the brand Ascend, according to sources.

The company’s new models will only get abbreviations and at Mobile World Congress 2015 we are expected to get more details. Interestingly, the Huawei products shown at CES 2015, the Mate7, Honor 6, Honor 6 Plus units are present on the company’s website, but there’s no trace of Ascend units. We can’t help but wonder what will happen to the follow-up of the Huawei Ascend P7…

It will most likely be called the Huawei P8, while the Ascend G7 and G6 may get a G8 as follow-up. This is not an uncommon decision, as LG gave up Optimus a few years ago, in favour of the G series and that worked out fine for them in the end. Sony and Nokia also gave up combining letters and numbers and turned to clear letters for Sony and number series for Lumia.

Thanks Stefan for the tip!
