The latest leaks of the Samsung Galaxy S8 design had us wondering where the fingerprint scanner went, aside from the fact that the camera flash got moved around and we got ultra narrow bezels. We suggest a few theories about this approach below.

Seeing how the edge to edge screen trend is so big that it’s omnipresent, Samsung couldn’t stay away, so they also went with ultra narrow bezels on their latest flagship. Or at least according to the latest leaks they did… The bottom bezel is the one that shows this tendency the most, getting much slimmer now that there’s no physical Home button.

The lack of a Home button also means that the fingerprint scanner integration is gone from the table. Sources say we may see it at the back of the phone, but the past 3 leaks didn’t show any sign of a special cutout for it. So we have two theories: it’s either integrated within the screen panel or it’s an ultrasonic sensor, so it can be integrated anywhere, detecting the print through glass, metal or plastic.

There’s also a third theory, that Samsung could have given it up in favour of the iris scanner, but that one is nowhere to be found on the latest leaks. I have to say that the decision to can the Home button was a good one, since the S8 looks great this way. Now functionality of the fingerprint sensor… we’ll see if that lines up well with the new design.
