Samsung and camera phones have a long and fruitful history, as this handset producer released some years ago a device equipped with a 10 megapixel camera. The device never made it into Europe, but things might stand different with its current handsets in development.

It’s official that two of the South Korean giant’s subsidiaries have developed 8 Megapixel camera modules with 3x optical zoom. Moreover, one of the handsets that they are working on will come with 8MP and 3x digital zoom in early 2009.

The module’s capabilities are improved by more than half; it has a 1/2.5 inch CMOS sensor and lens that support F2.85. In plus, it also turns out to be slightly bigger than the 5MP one previously developed by Samsung.

Samsung is also currently working on a 12 megapixel camera phone. The device should be even more compact than this one, but it will take a lot more time until it will hit the market.
