Apple is going the Google Nexus One way with the iPhone 4, but after having sold it through carriers. Yes, you’ve heard right: the latest iPhone now goes for $649 unlocked directly from Apple. No carrier association is present and you can find the product on the US Apple online store.

The thing with this unit is that it allows you to make calls abroad and switch microSIM cards as your heart pleases. The 16GB unlocked iPhone 4 costs $649, while the 32GB one retails for $749. This is a bit much for Americans used to pay around $200 for a modern smartphone with a 2 year contract and many minutes and MB of data included.

If you take Apple’s offer, you’ll get your product delivered to your door in 3 business days if you choose the black iPhone, or 3-5 days if you went with the white one.
