Verizon has just confirmed the launch date for the long-awaited Verizon Droid R2-D2 version, destined to reached the pockets of Star Wars fans on September 30th. The device will be sold for $249, after a $100 mail-in rebate and with a 2 year contract.

In case you’re wondering, the difference between the standard Droid 2 and the Star Wars version is around $50. Too bad that the smartphone doesn’t feature that 1.2GHz CPU that was rumored a week ago, although the World Edition handset might. Here’s a specs list, if you’re curious:

CPU: 1GHz OMAP 3600 Series
Display: 3.7 inch touch display, 854 x 480 pixels
Keyboard: side sliding QWERTY
Memory: 512MB RAM, 8GB Flash Storage, 8GB microSD
Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, WiFi, EDGE,
Camera: 5MP, video capture
Battery: 1400 mAh
OS: Android 2.2
Other features: Star Wars media dock, exclusive Star Wars content

Verizon has also promised to launch an Empire Strikes Back app for Android 2.1, providing widgets, sound clips, wallpapers and more content from the famous movie series. Also expect the carrier to throw a bunch of theme parties with Star Wars characters in a bunch of its shops.
