YouTube has just announced a new type of video resolution for its service, called 4K. The announcement was made during VidCon 2010 and we learn that these new videos were shot in original aspect ratio, reaching all the way to 4096p. This means you’ll be viewing videos in 4096 x 3072 pixel resolutions, with the minimum one being 360p.

If you can’t imagine this performance, try to think about the ideal viewing resolution on a 25 feet screen. This is a 4K video… As a comparison, IMAX movies are projected using 2k resolution projectors. The new format is the highest quality of video available and there are limitations you should know about: video cameras shooting in this resolution are expensive and projectors that support it are HUGE.

Also, watching the vids on YouTube requires a superfast connection.
